Tolpis barbata is an annual stem thermophyte that reaches heights of 6 to 90 centimeters. The lower leaves are 2–10 centimeters long, linear-lanceolate to broadly ovate, with entire margins, roughly toothed to pinnate, usually pointed, the upper leaves are similar but smaller. The flower heads are 17-30 millimeters wide, inside with brownish purple, outside with pale yellow ray-florets, which are twice as long as the envelope. The outer bracts are grannenartig and equally long or longer pressed nichrt than the inner and. The fruits have a pappus of numerous short hairs. The inner fruits also have (0) 2 to 5 long bristles.

The flowering period extends from March to July (October).

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18.

Occurrence

Tolpis barbata occurs in the Mediterranean area on Phrygana and dry stony ruderal places at altitudes from 0 to 700 meters. The species avoids lime. It is originally found in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Spain, Portugal, Madeira, Porto Santo and Gibraltar and is also introduced in the Azores and Canaries.

Taxonomy

A synonym for Tolpis barbata (L.) Gaertn. is Crepis barbata L. (Basionym). The species was made by Joseph Gärtner in Fruct. Sem. Pl. 2: 372, 1791 placed in the genus Tolpis .
