Tolpis virgata is a species of the genus Tolpis in the sunflower family (Asteraceae).

features

Tolpis virgata is a perennial stem hemicryptophyte that reaches heights of 30 to 100 centimeters. The outer bracts are shorter than the inner ones . All fruits have a pappus of 4 or more long hairs.

The flowering period extends from May to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 18 or 54.

Occurrence

Tolpis virgata occurs in the Mediterranean area on Phrygana , forest clearings, fallow land, scree slopes, sandy coasts and clay areas at altitudes from 0 to 1200 (2000) meters. The distribution area includes France, Italy, Algeria, Sardinia, Sicily, Corsica, Tunisia, Libya, the Balkan Peninsula, Crete, Cyprus, the Aegean Sea, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria, Jordan and Israel.

Systematics

One can distinguish the following subspecies:

  • Tolpis virgata subsp. apolloniae Brullo & Furnari : It occurs in Libya. The number of chromosomes is 2n = 54.
  • Tolpis virgata subsp. grandiflora (Ten.) Arcang. (Syn .: Tolpis grandiflora Ten. ): It occurs in Italy, Sardinia and Sicily.
  • Tolpis virgata subsp. virgata
