action
The 12 year old farm boy Tom lives with his mother in poor conditions in the country. He is slightly unintelligent, but full of lust for life. One day he goes to the village with his friend Crosby, a talking and intelligent dog, to sell the last cow. On the way he meets a wondrous man who plays on a magic organ and offers him a handful of “magic beans” in exchange for the cow. Tom takes the beans. When he gets home, his mother scolds and hits him. She throws the beans that are common in her eyes out of the window.
During the night the magic beans begin to grow until they finally reach the sky. A little mouse slips off the bean and asks for help. Tom and Crosby climb up. There they discover the realm of clouds, in which the evil witch Madame Noir with her monster son Tulip as high as a house wants to seize power. In addition, a wedding between the son and the fairy princess Margareta, the last survivor of the fairy kingdom, who has been enchanted since the murder of her parents, is imminent. The ugly witch, also known as the "Queen of the Night", wants to make the fairy kingdom her own and plans to take over power by marrying her huge, unintelligent and devoured monster son into the royal family. Secretly, however, she wants sole rule by murdering the two immediately after the wedding.
Tom and Crosby as well as the court staff, enchanted into mice, help to take up the fight against the witch. After Tom stole the gold treasure from the princess and brought it to his mother on earth, he has a bad conscience - not least because of his dog Crosby - and both of them resolutely climb the beanstalk again.
In the cloud castle, Madame Noir prepares everything for the wedding, but in the middle of the ceremony Tom bursts and releases Princess Margareta with a kiss on the mouth. Tulip chases them through the cloud kingdom while both run to the well to flee. In one sequence they are confronted with the fatal Madame Noir, who almost kills them, but her son Tulip turns against the mother's orders and crushes the witch . There is no human corpse under his foot, but a broken robot. Madame Noir was a machine.
In a final battle, Tom and Crosby take on the stupid giant Tulip before sliding down the well and back to earth. Tulip follows them, but Tom manages to chop up the beanstalk with an ax. Tulip plunges into the depths.
In the end, Crosby longs to return to the fairy kingdom, but a breakfast of ham and eggs pulls him out of his sadness.
