Tom Robinson Band

The Tom Robinson Band was a British rock band that became popular with the punk movement in the 1970s .

The group was founded in London in January 1977 and was best known for its political and socially critical texts (similar to The Clash or Trust ). The band campaigned for equality for women and for the rights of gays as well as for Amnesty International and against racism . The band leader Tom Robinson in particular became an idol of the gay movement through the song Glad to be gay , he describes himself as bisexual .

The band's greatest commercial success was the single 2-4-6-8 Motorway , which reached number 5 on the UK Singles Chart in 1978. The debut album Power in the Darkness also reached number 5 in the charts in the same year .

In 1979 the second album TRB2 was released , but it was not able to build on its predecessor, both artistically and commercially. Shortly thereafter, the band broke up after Danny Kustow left.
