The Tomondo was a stern paddle steamer in the imperial governorate of German East Africa .

history

The ship was built in 1908 with hull number 232 at the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg for use on the Rufiji in German East Africa. As a flattening ship, the Tomondo could sail up the river beyond the Rufiji Delta. The shallow depth of the fairway limited the Tomondo's loading capacity , so that lighters were towed behind the ship to carry additional cargo. The maximum speed of the stern wheel steamer with the current could reach 5.29 knots and against the current 2.45 knots.

After the outbreak of World War I in August 1914, the Tomondo was used from September 1914 to supply the cruiser Königsberg lying in the Rufiji .

On October 9, 1916, the Tomondo was scuttled in Rufiji so as not to fall into the hands of the British troops advancing into the colony.
