Tompkins Table

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Tompkins Table is an annual ranking table for the University of Cambridge . The individual colleges of the University of Cambridge with their undergraduates are considered , whose achievements in the university's annual final exams represent a decisive indicator in the ranking. The Tompkins Table was named after Peter Tompkins, an undergraduate in mathematics who initiated this ranking in 1981.

The Tompkins Table appears exclusively for the British daily newspaper " The Independent ".

The Oxford counterpart to the Tompkins Table is called the Norrington Table , which was created in 1986.

method

A first class degree in an undergraduate final exam is awarded five points. Three points are awarded to an upper second (2-1). A lower second (2-2) gets two points and one point is given for a third . The assessed points in each subject are independent of one another, as one takes into account that the proportion of subjects depends on the college. For example, geography is not offered in Pembroke and Peterhouse . It should also be borne in mind that in some subjects it is more difficult to achieve a first class degree than in others.

The Tompkins scores in the table as a result express the achieved percentage of the total points to be achieved by a college in the ranking. The higher the percentage a college has, the higher up it is on the Tompkins Table.

In recent years, Emmanuel College has been ranked best, followed by Trinity College . As only the performance of undergraduates is examined, 29 colleges out of a total of 31 colleges at the University of Cambridge are represented on the Tompkins Table. Two colleges, namely Clare Hall and Darwin , are exclusively for postgraduates and are therefore not represented in the ranking.

The college ranking à la Tompkins is not representative, as St. Edmund's College, Hughes Hall, Lucy Cavendish College, and Wolfson College are the so-called Mature Colleges , which only allow students over the age of 21 to enroll and the undergraduates therefore not one Majority of the colleges display what explains the position of these colleges at the bottom of the Tompkins table.
