Toni Stooss (born July 13, 1946 in Bern ) is a Swiss exhibition organizer and art historian .

Life

Stooss studied art history , archeology and journalism in his hometown . From 1970 he moved to the Free University of Berlin . He first worked as an art critic and for Swiss television. In 1972 he began working on the design of exhibitions. From 1978 to 1982 he held a leading position at the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Berlin .

From 1982 to 1992 Toni Stooss was exhibition manager at the Kunsthaus Zürich , where he oversaw exhibitions in all areas, from historical exhibitions to modern art to contemporary art and film.

In 1992 he was appointed director of the art gallery to be founded in Vienna. He ended his work in Vienna with an Alberto Giacometti retrospective in the Kunsthalle. In 1995 he became director of the Kunstmuseum Bern. This separated from him in April 2001.

Toni Stooss has been a freelance art historian and curator since January 2002 . Among other things, he curated a Maria Lassnig exhibition in Zurich.

Toni Stoss has been responsible for the collection of the Liner Foundation and the Ziegelhütte art gallery in Appenzell since the beginning of 2003 . This contract was extended indefinitely in March 2005.

From 2005 he was director of the Museum der Moderne in the city of Salzburg , where he was elected to succeed Agnes Husslein in June 2005 . On April 8, 2010, it was announced that Stooss' contract would be extended from the end of 2010 to mid-2013. Sabine Breitwieser became his successor on September 1, 2013 .

In 2014 he was awarded the Great Merit of the State of Salzburg .
