Hunt was born in Alert Bay, British Columbia in 1942 and trained in carving from an early age by his grandfather Mungo Martin . After Martin's death in 1962, he became the assistant to his father, Henry Hunt , who made elaborate carvings in Thunderbird Park in Victoria . His two brothers Stanley Hunt and Richard Hunt are also artists.

In 1970 he opened the Arts of the Raven Gallery in Victoria.

In 1979 he carved a six and a half meter tall totem pole in Bonn for the Federal Garden Show in what was then the federal capital , where visitors could watch him at work. He had specially cut an approximately 100-year-old Pacific Red Cedar (botanical name "Thuja plicata", giant tree of life ) in British Columbia and had it transported to the Rhine, as the wood is easy to work with, is very durable and traditionally used for totem poles was taken. The totem pole, carved on site in four months, was a gift from the Canadian government for the Federal Garden Show in Bonn's Rheinaue .

In 2010 Tony Hunt was awarded the Order of British Columbia for his services .
