Atanasio "Tony" Pérez Rigal (born May 14, 1942 in Ciego de Ávila , Cuba ) is a former Cuban baseball player and manager in Major League Baseball .

biography

Tony Pérez made his debut with the Cincinnati Reds in the National League on July 26, 1964 as a third baseman . The Cuban spent the first thirteen of his 24 seasons with the Reds and became part of the Big Red Machine , as the team was called in the 1970s. From 1967 to 1976, Pérez achieved more than 90 RBI annually.

He was able to reach the World Series four times with the Reds . In 1970 they were defeated by the Baltimore Orioles in five games. In 1972 they were subject to the Oakland Athletics in seven games. In 1975 and 1976 the Reds then won against the Boston Red Sox and the New York Yankees . Tony Pérez played his fifth World Series with the Philadelphia Phillies in 1983. There was a clear 4-0 defeat against the Orioles. In his World Series appearances, Pérez came up with a batting average of 36.8%.

After the 1976 season, he left the Reds and played for the Red Sox, Montreal Expos and Phillies before returning to the Reds in 1984. There he played his last game on October 5, 1986.

In 1993 he was a manager at the Reds. In 2001, after John Boles was fired, he took on the job of manager of the Florida Marlins for the remainder of the season. He currently works as an assistant to the general manager for the Marlins.

In 2000, Tony Pérez was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame .
