Tony Thompson (* 18th October 1971 in Silver Spring , Maryland , USA as Anthony Tyrone Thompson ) is an American heavyweight boxer.

career

Tony "The Tiger" Thompson, father of seven children, only started boxing at the age of 27 and turned pro a little later, in 2000, at the age of 28. Although he is right-handed, he boxed in the right-hand display. After winning his first four fights, he lost to the then undefeated and highly regarded Eric Kirkland in four rounds on points, his first and only defeat for the next eight years. He is said to have good taker skills, until his defeat against Wladimir Klitschko Thompson was never on the ground.

2001 Thompson then won against the undefeated Chester Hughes by technical knockout in the first round, which aroused a lot of interest in him. Despite a weight of over 110 kg, he only has an average impact power. Since he boxed effectively but unspectacularly and did not have a great charisma, he always had difficulty getting big fights. In 2004 he inflicted the unbeaten Cuban Yanqui Díaz on his first defeat and defeated Vaughn Bean quite clearly on points. In 2006 he defeated Dominick Guinn, who is very well known in the USA .

Thompson was discussed several times in 2006 as an opponent of Luan Krasniqi , but he twice canceled planned fights. Thompson then defeated the Uzbek Timur Ibragimow (21-1) in February 2007, who had only been defeated by Calvin Brock until then .

On July 14, 2007 Tony Thompson finally boxed in an elimination match for the WBO world title in Hamburg against Krasniqi and won in the fifth round by technical knockout. With this victory he rose to the official title challenger of the WBO association. Since the then reigning WBO world champion Sultan Ibragimow initially defended his title against ex-world champion Evander Holyfield and then lost the belt to IBF world champion Wladimir Klitschko in a union fight , Thompson had to wait a year for his title chance. In the meantime, he defeated Cliff Couser in two rounds.

On July 12, 2008 he lost in Hamburg against Klitschko in the fight for the IBF and WBO heavyweight championships by a knockout in the eleventh round. After he often revealed gaps in cover in previous appearances, he surprised in the fight against Klitschko with a good double cover, which Klitschko caused some problems at the beginning of the fight, so that the Ukrainian with his otherwise dominant leading hand initially had little success. Instead, Klitschko concentrated on landing the decisive hit with the comparatively frequent use of the right punch. In the second half of the fight Thompson became visibly tired, and so Klitschko succeeded in the eleventh round of knockout success.

After five successful development fights, each of which Thompson won through a technical knockout, a rematch against Klitschko took place on July 7, 2012 in the Stade de Suisse in Bern , but he lost it in round 6 through knockout. With this, Klitschko once again confirmed his world title. On February 23, 2013 Tony Thompson surprisingly defeated David Price , who was twelve years younger than him, in the second round by TKO ( Technical Knockout ).

In the heavyweight rematch on July 6, 2013 Tony Thompson defeated David Price again, this time in the fifth round. Thompson struggled with his opponent in the first few laps as Price kept him at a good distance and landed some good hits. But then Thompson repeatedly forced his tired opponent to exchange blows in the half distance and was able to land many hard punches. In lap five, Thompson finally drove his opponent in front of him with more hard punches until he was able to catch him on the ring and covered with more punches. Referee Marcus McDonnell interrupted the fight, counted David Price standing and then stopped the fight.

Thompson played his last professional fight on March 5, 2016 against Luis Ortiz. He lost by knockout in round 6.

Others

His children gave him his nickname "The Tiger", based on Tony Tiger, an advertising character for the Kellogg Company for their "Frosties" breakfast cereal.
