The Toom brand's first DIY store opened in 1978 in Frankfurt am Main . In the 1980s and 1990s, the company expanded throughout Germany. Then the focus was mainly on takeovers: In 1997, the Rewe Group first bought the Klee garden center and merged it with Toom Baumarkt. In mid-1997, 52 locations of the insolvent DIY store and garden center chain Götzen were added. A few more branches were integrated into Toom Baumarkt's sales network without being taken over directly. At the turn of the year 1998/1999, the Rewe Group acquired 138 Stinnes hardware stores. With the acquisitions mentioned, Toom Baumarkt significantly expanded its market position: While in 1998 sales of around 700 million marks in 76 DIY stores , the chain now reached over three billion marks. The acquisitions are an example of the consolidation of the industry at the end of the 1990s. By investing in Toom Baumarkt, the Rewe Group made itself less dependent on the food retail sector.

As part of the integration of the Götzen and Stinnes branches, Toom Baumarkt moved its headquarters from Mülheim an der Ruhr to Cologne, where the company is still based today. After the turn of the millennium, experiments were carried out with digital offers in selected branches, for example in the form of electronic information boards on shopping carts. Occasionally, robots were also used to look after customers. The expansion of the franchise system was also accelerated. In 2002, the Rewe Group introduced a discount concept at Toom Baumarkt's low-turnover locations, initially under the Zack brand. From 2006, the remaining hardware stores were extensively modernized. The company invested particularly in customer service . In connection with a relaunch of the Toom brand, the chain was geared more towards women.

In 2007, the Rewe Group again strengthened the DIY store division by taking over 133 Marktkauf locations. The affected branches were renamed Toom Baumarkt, whereby the chain secured its position as the third largest supplier. During further expansion, the company opened up to smaller project developers in order to further expand its presence in the area. In addition to building new hardware stores and garden centers, Toom Baumarkt also took over branches from competitors, such as Obi and Praktiker . Occasionally there were also hypermarkets under the Toom brand, which were converted into Rewe Centers from the mid-2000s.

In recent years Toom Baumarkt has paid more attention to the topic of sustainability. This concerns, among other things, the use of sustainable materials in the construction of stores or the expansion of sustainable products in the range as well as the widespread renunciation of glyphosate . In 2015 the company started an "online garden center" under the domain Gartenliebe.de, which operates in an independent subsidiary . Like the Toom Baumarkt brands, this is part of the Rewe Group's National Specialist Stores division.

Toom Baumarkt is the nucleus of the company. The range includes products from the areas of garden and leisure, building and renovation, living and household, workshop and machinery, as well as bathroom and sanitary. Toom Baumarkt has been offering products under its own brand "toom" since 2012. This also includes an organic range for the kitchen garden. Toom hardware stores target both do-it-yourselfers and professional craftsmen. The company promotes a range of quality, service and price guarantees that are comparable to those offered by other chains.

With the opening of the first Zack DIY store in 1999 in Wuppertal, the Rewe Group entered the discount segment. In the following years the group multiplied the concept in cooperation with independent dealers. Because of disputes over the naming rights, the chain has been operating under the name "B1 Discount Baumarkt" since 2007. The range includes 12,000 articles from the fields of garden, interior design, wall and ceiling design, renovation, installation as well as tools and machines.

In addition to the Toom and B1 DIY stores, the company operates the Klee garden specialty stores for plants and other garden tools, furniture and accessories. At the end of 2018 there were still two such garden centers nationwide , in which the Rewe Group holds around 20% each.
