Topo Gioia

Daniel "Topo" Gioia (* around 1952 in Rosario ) is an Argentine percussionist who mainly plays congas .

Gioia started doing percussion as an autodidact at the age of 15 . In 1973 he migrated to Spain, where he performed for two years in Madrid and Barcelona with various Latin American formations. He has lived in Berlin since 1977, where he founded the Ipanema formation . He worked with Hans Hartmann in various groups for eleven years . He also accompanied Lydie Auvray . Then he played for six years with the Afro-Brazilian dancer Ismael Ivo , with whom he performed all over Europe and Japan. Since 1992 he was part of the band of Jocelyn B. Smith ; at the same time he worked with the accordionist Cathrin Pfeifer. In 1997 he was with Steve Lacyon US and European tour; since 2004 he has accompanied Yvonne Catterfeld . He also directed the Latin jazz band Pa'que . He also performed with Charlie Eitner , John Newton , Giora Feidman , Lalo Schifrin , Mikis Theodorakis , Maria Farantouri and Ray Anderson . He can also be heard on albums by Hendrik Meurkens , Norbert Saric / Ernie Watts , Bajazzo and Experimenti Berlin .

As a studio musician , Gioia has been involved in over 300 albums, for example by Mezzoforte , Ronaldo Folegatti , Cora Frost , Manfred Krug and Klaus Hoffmann . In 1988 he was named the best conga player in the "Latin Percussion Competition" in Germany. Since 1999 he has also worked as a percussion lecturer at the Hanns Eisler Music Academy in Berlin .
