Torleif Sigurðsson

Torleif Sigurðsson (* 1946 in Klaksvík , Faroe Islands (?); † February 12, 2008 ) was a Faroese sports official who led the Faroese national team into membership of UEFA and FIFA .

Torleif Sigurðsson was a retail salesman, shipowner and ship chandler. From 1981 to 2002 he was honorary president of the Faroese Football Association , later of the Faroese Rowing Association .

When the Faroe Islands had to decide in 1989 whether they should take part in the European Championship qualification , Sigurðsson was able to prevail against all odds. The historic success of the Faroe Islands - Austria football match in 1990 proved him right. Sigurðsson later represented the Faroe Islands at UEFA and received an award from her in 2005.

Most recently he was president of his home club KÍ Klaksvík .

Torleif Sigurðsson was married to Elsa Maria and they had four children together. Steindór, who was killed in a traffic accident, Sofía, Margretha and Erna.
