Torre Ladrones (also Torre de los Ladrones , Tower of Thieves') is a maintainability or watchtower from the 13th to 15th centuries on the south coast of the Spanish province of Malaga in Andalusia . He is known as "Property of Cultural Interest" in 1985 ( " Bien de Interés Cultural " - classified BIC). The tower is located 100 meters from the coastline on the western outskirts of Cabopino in the municipality of Marbella .
Location and description
The Torre Ladrones is located 13 kilometers east of the center of Marbella on the Mediterranean coast , 400 meters northwest of Cape Punta Ladrones , where the port entrance of the Cabopino marina is today. The settlement boundary of Cabopino east of the tower is only 100 meters away. In front of the tower a pier extends into the sea, which separates the beach of Cabopino with the port entrance in the east from the beach of Artola in the west. Behind the latter extends the nature reserve of the dunes of Artola (Monumento Natural de las Dunas de Artola) , which also includes the location of the Torre Ladrones .
The Torre Ladrones rises on a square base with a side length of 3.65 meters to a height of 14.6 meters. On an approximately 3 meter high base made of natural stone , the tower has three floors made of a combination of red bricks and natural stones. The sides of the floors decrease slightly towards the top. As a watch tower, the Torre Ladrones has no window or door openings in the basement. The entrance is about 8 meters high on the north side of the middle floor. About 1.5 meters above this, a small window is embedded in the brickwork of the middle floor. Another smaller window opening is on the south side of the upper floor. On top of it is a platform on which beacons could be lit.
The origins of the Torre Ladrones go back to the 13th to 15th centuries, the time of the Emirate of Granada . The tower, which was destroyed several times, acquired its current appearance in the 16th century, particularly through the pyramid-like reinforcement of its base, the natural stone plinth. During this time it served with additional towers along the coast to protect against attacks by the Ottoman fleet and pirates from the barbarian states in northern Africa.
