The chromosome number is for Torreya nucifera var. Radicans Nakai 2n = 22.
Occurrences and common names
The Japanese nut slice occurs on the South Korean islands of Wando and Cheju-do and in south-central to southern Japan on the islands of southern Honshu , Kyushu and Shikoku . In Japan this species is called Kaya ( Japanese 榧 ).
Taxonomy
It was first published in 1753 under the name ( Basionym ) Taxus nucifera by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum . 1st edition. Volume 2, p. 1040. The new combination to Torreya nucifera (L.) Sieb. & Zucc. took place in 1846 by Philipp Franz von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini in treatises of the mathematical-physical class of the Royal Bavarian Academy of Sciences. Volume 4, No. 3, p. 234. Synonyms for Torreya nucifera (L.) Sieb. & Zucc. are: Caryotaxus nucifera (L.) Henkel et W. Hochst. , Foetataxus nucifera (L.) Nelson , Podocarpus nucifer Loudon , Taxodium nuciferum (L.) Brongn. ex Voigt , Tumion nuciferum (L.) Greene , Torreya ascendens Nakai ex Uyeki , Torreya fruticosa Nakai , Torreya igaensis Doi et Morikawa , Torreya macrosperma Miyoshi , Torreya anda Miyoshi , Torreya nucifera var. articulata Miyoshi , Torreya nucifera var. radicans Nakai .
use
Due to its slow growth, the wood of the Japanese nut slice is very hard and has a special sound, fine grain and color. That is why it is used in Japan to make Go game boards .
The seeds are edible and are also used to make cooking oil .
protection
In Japan, Torreya nucifera is under protection. In previous years it was cut down intensively due to its positive properties.
