Torsten Wasastjerna

Torsten Gideon Wasastjerna (born December 17, 1863 in Helsinki ; † July 1, 1924 there ) was a Finnish painter .

Life

Wasastjerna was born the son of the lawyer Edvin Gideon Wasastjerna and his wife Rudolfina Charlotta Barck. From 1879 to 1885 he attended the drawing school of the Finnish Art Association, from 1883 to 1885 the University of Helsinki and in 1885 the Helsinki Art School. Then he went to Düsseldorf to study at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . Hugo Crola , Johann Peter Theodor Janssen , Adolf Schill , Eduard Gebhardt and Julius Roeting were his teachers there between 1885 and 1888 . He had been friends with Victor Westerholm since his time in Düsseldorf . With him he traveled to Paris in 1888 on a grant from the Finnish state. In 1888/90 and 1892 he studied at the Académie Julian , among others with Henri Lucien Doucet (1856–1895) and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant . In 1890 he received the 2nd prize, in 1891 the 1st prize in the competition of the Finnish Art Association, the so-called "Ducat Prize", which has been awarded annually since 1858.

He was married to Aleksandra Maria, née Prästén (1879–1948), with whom he had three daughters. In addition to a painter, he was active as a lyric and dramatic writer.

Wasastjerna created figural compositions and above all landscape painting . In the 1890s, his painting made a transition to impressionism . Also Symbolist paintings and other works with fantastic motifs among his work. Works can be found in the Ateneum and the Helsinki City Museum as well as in the Hämeenlinna Art Museum.
