Tortilia flavella is a butterfly from the family of Stathmopodidae . The species belongs to a complex of habitually very similar species that are distributed from North Africa across the Middle East to India . The type locality of the species is in Biskra ( Algeria ).

features

The moths reach a wingspan of 9 to 11 millimeters. The head shines white on the forehead ( frons ) and yellowish white on the vertex. The tuft of the neck shines brown. The antennae and scapus are brown at the tip. The flagellum, i.e. the antennae whip without the two basic members, is pale yellow in the basal half and ocher-brown in the distal half. Thorax and tegulae have a pale yellow sheen. The forewings are pale yellow and have a brown, triangular or trapezoidal band that extends from the Kostalader to the middle of the inner wing edge. The apical third of the forewing is brown and sometimes with a yellow line, which often reaches the outer edge of the bandage shortly before the inner wing edge. The fringed scales are pale yellow to pale ocher in color. The hind wings shine light gray. The genitals of the males are similar to those of Tortilia graeca , but they differ by the slimmer Valven and the bottle-shaped aedeagus . The genitals of the females are similar to those of Tortilia charadritis , but they differ in the very long rows of short spines on the ductus bursae and the smaller spine spots on the corpus bursae.

distribution

Tortilia flavella is common in Spain ( Granada ), North Africa and the Middle East ( Syria and Israel ).

biology

The caterpillars were detected on flowers and fruits of acacia ( Acacia ) and on dried fruits of the pomegranate ( Punica granatum ) from the previous year. The moths fly from May to September and are likely to form two generations.
