biography

Kita studied architecture at Osaka University until 1964 and went to Milan in 1969 , where he worked with Mario Bellini and Silvio Coppola and got to know new materials and designs. In 1971 he opened his own studio in Milan and has since designed furniture and other products for various customers. His best-known works include the “Alto Basso” table for De Padova , the Kyòs kitchen range for Disegno Duo (1993), the “Fido”, “Titti” and “Walk” chairs for Moroso, Italy , frosted glass objects for Ritzenhoff , various elements for Tecnolumen and chairs and a seating group for Wittmann . There is also the “TOK” chair and the Ara series consisting of an armchair with stool, a sofa and a convertible lounger for Interprofil . His “Wink” armchair made of a steel frame with hemispherical castors and a polyurethane cover with Dracon was developed for the Italian company Cassina . The armchair also has oversized, ear-shaped headrests and a bright color scheme, both of which were interpreted as an ironic quote from Pop Art . In 1988, Kira developed the two lamp models On Taro and On Giro for the Kreon company together with the New York artist Keith Haring . For the first time, they use electroluminescent lampshades.

Kita received the Japan Interior Design Award in 1975 and the Product Design Award from the Institute of Business Designers in 1983 . Some of his works, including the “Wink” and the “Kick” table, have been included in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Hamburg Museum of Art and Crafts and other international museums. Kita also became a professor at the Osaka Art School  ( 大阪 芸 術 大学 , Ōsaka Geijutsu Daigaku ) he publishes and exhibits regularly.
