action

In 1683 in the American village of Devonsville three women were accused of witchcraft, tried by an inquisition court and cruelly executed by angry, godly villagers. Shortly before her death, one of the doomed women manages to curse the community and its residents in a final show of strength.

Devonsville in the present. For the 300th anniversary of the witch hunt, the attractive, red-haired teacher Jenny Scanlin comes with two other women, the scientist Chris and the self-confident radio presenter Monica, to the sleepy village, which is inhabited by the ultra-conservative and superstitious descendants of the former accusers. In the general store, the young educator meets the overweight Walter Gibbs and the attractive hermit Matthew "Matt" Pendleton. For some time Gibbs has been plagued by visions and surreal perceptions that even make him the murderer of his seriously ill wife. The confused man sees the teacher called in as a possible love affair, which he woos a little clumsily. When Scanlin does not reciprocate his feelings, the rejected man is haunted by a terrible nightmare that leads him to believe that Scanlin is a witch .

The three women brought in quickly make themselves unpopular with the village community for various reasons. Some villagers firmly believe in Devonsville's vow of revenge and see the three newcomers as the reincarnated witches killed. Little by little, this distrust also strikes the unsuspecting women. Scanlin turns to Matt Pendleton for help, who informs her of the activities and advises her to leave. In addition, the young teacher, who is also kept awake by mysterious dreams, is looking for the seedy doctor Dr. Warley, a direct descendant of the witch-hunt executioner. The doctor, who has been researching the history of the village for some time, especially the Inquisition, undertakes a journey through time with his patient through hypnosis . This is how Dr. Warley of the young woman's true identity - she is the resurrected witch who once condemned the place. Contrary to the gradually worsening situation, the aging doctor remains level-headed and calm. He hides this incident.

In the meantime, some residents of the village are getting into a real madness. A brutal witch hunt ensues and Chris and Monica are tortured to death. When the angry mob Jenny Scanlin wants to burn ritually, the handcuffed woman proves to be extremely defensive. Using flashes of energy, she can dematerialize her tormentors and thus take revenge on the unteachable descendants. At the end of the film, the uninjured teacher flees the village by bus.
