Ray Colcord
Ray Colcord III (born December 24, 1949 in Manhattan , New York City , New York , † February 5, 2016 in Studio City , Los Angeles , California ) was an American film and television composer and music producer . In his long career, he wrote the music for over 60 television series, films and shows.
life and career
Colcord was born in 1949 to a real estate investor.
As a teenager, Colcord toured with the Columbus Boychoir . He studied law at Rice University in Houston , Texas , but soon dropped out due to conflicts with very conservative fellow students. He was later a keyboardist in Roy Head's band . In 1970 he became an A&R employee at Columbia Records .
In 1971 he played the electric piano on Don McLean's album American Pie . After getting to know the band Aerosmith , he left Columbia Records to co - produce Aerosmith's second album Get Your Wings with Jack Douglas . He then went on tour with Lou Reed as a pianist. Among other things, he can be heard on Reed's live album Rock 'n' Roll Animal .
In 1973 he moved to Los Angeles and started working for United Artists Records . From 1976 he was music director of the improv comedy group The Groundlings . From 1982 he was music director of the television program An Evening at the Improv . From 1983 onwards, he mainly wrote music for television series, films and shows.
Colcord was a member of the Society of Composers & Lyricists, of which he was president for several years. Colcord was also the governor of the Television Academy and a member of the Board of Directors of the Film Music Society. He lectured on music production at the UCLA Extension .
Ray Colcord died on February 5, 2016 at his Studio City home of a pancreatic tumor diagnosed four years earlier. He left his wife Madeleine Elizabeth (née Ennis), with whom he had been married since 1983, their son and brother.
