The Tour de l'Archet is a castle in the Aosta Valley and is located in the municipality of Morgex in Italy .

history

The name of this castle, built between the 10th and 12th centuries, is derived from that of the old L'Archet family (formerly De Arculo ), who came from Aosta , where they adapted the Arch of Augustus to their residence.

This is where the Centro studi storico-letterari Natalino Sapegno Foundation and the Caricature Library for the preservation and examination of the 30,000 pieces in the Mafrica Collection are located.

description

Only a tower and a basic permanent house remain from the original building . The building is crenellated and shows a stone portal on one side, on the lintel of which a double arch with a small, stone cross window and the coat of arms of the House of Savoy is carved above.

Floor plan of the Tour de l'Archet from 1936 (Carlo Nigra)

The Tour de l'Archet is similar in many respects to other towers in the Aosta Valley, such as the Torre de la Plantaz in Gressan and the Tour de Ville in Arnad : the walls of remarkable thickness (over 2 meters), the massive construction and the construction, so the use of sandwich walls with a core made of cast masonry . The researcher of castle construction in the Aosta Valley, André Zanotto , assumes that towers one and three rose on a flat ground and thus had no natural defensive aspects. Also Mauro Cortellazzo , the long takes, is of the same opinion:

“The Tour Malluquin in Courmayeur , the Tour de l'Archet in Morgex, the Tour Lescours in La Salle , the Torre de la Plantaz and the Torre di Sant'Anselmo in Gressan, the recently discovered tower in the Castello di Fénis , the Torre di Néran in Châtillon , the Torre di Ville in Arnad and two other towers in the side valleys, the Torre di Vachéry in Etroubles and the Tour d'Hérères in Perloz . All these towers were built in places that do not have any morphological element to facilitate defense. On the contrary: the choice of flat locations, open and not always close to roads, seems clear. All of these ten structures are characterized by their particular choice of location. "
