The Le Tour de Filipinas is a professional Filipino stage race in road cycling . The race has been held annually in Luzon , Philippines since 1955 . The race has been part of the UCI Asia Tour in category 2.2 since 2010 . The race traditionally ends in Rizal Park in Manila . Its previous names include the Tour of Luzon , the Marlboro Tour , the Tour of Calabarzon , the Tour of the Philippines, and Padyak Pinoy before adopting the current name.
history
1955 to 1976 - Tour of Luzon
In 1955 the tour was launched as a four-day race from Manila to Vigan, which was won by Antonio Arzala . In 1977, disagreements with the organizer resulted in two tours taking place in the same year.
1979 to 1998 - Marlboro Tour
In 1979, Marlboro became the tour's official sponsor and the event was renamed the Marlboro Tour. During this time, the tour expanded its routes by including cities from Visayas in the stages. The last rounds are regularly held in Rizal Park in front of the Quirino Grandstand in Manila .
1997–1998 drivers from Asia were allowed to take part in the event. As a result, in 1997 Wong Kam Po from Hong Kong was the first non-Filipino to win the event.
1999 to 2001 - end of the Marlboro Tour
In 1999, Marlboro withdrew as a sponsor, which proved to be a devastating blow to the organizers. It is believed that several million pesos were lost in advertising revenue and that it was not possible to hold the event from 1999 to 2001. A law was passed in the Philippines banning cigarette advertising on television, radio, or at sporting events such as the Marlboro Tour.
2002 until today
In 2002 the tour was revived after new sponsors were found. At the end of May there was a four-day race called the FedEx Tour of Calabarzon . A year later the name was changed to Air21 Tour Pilipinas and it was held over 17 stages. The tour was won by Arnel Quirimit from Pangasinan .
In 2005 the tour was renamed “Golden Tour 50 @ 05” to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the tour. Warren Davadilla , the winner of the last edition of the Marlboro Tour in 1998, won the anniversary event. In 2006, the eight-stage event was renamed Padyak Pinoy and won by Santi Barnachea .
At the 2016 event, the organizers had to stop a stage for the first time in the history of the race due to unprecedented road repairs and the resulting traffic jams in Tiaong , Quezon .
The current sponsor is Airfreight 2100, the official brand carrier of FedEx and Air21.
