Towanda is a small town a few miles east of Wichita in the US state of Kansas in Butler County . In 2000 the community had 1,138 inhabitants and an area of 1.9 km². The population density is 698.1 / km². Towanda is located on the Whitewater River , a tributary of the Walnut River .
history
The first settler near Towanda was CL Chandler. At that time he looked for gold in the area around Towanda, but was unsuccessful. In 1870 a trading post was built, in 1892 a blacksmith, a barber shop, a meat market, an office for the doctor, a butcher's shop, a baker, a newspaper and two hotels were added. On March 31, 1892 at around 9:30 a.m., a tornado destroyed almost the entire settlement. 8 of the 300 residents were killed and many more injured.
