The Tramway de Pithiviers à Toury (TPT) was a nearly 31 km long field railway with 600 mm gauge from Pithiviers to Toury in France, of which 3.5 km are still operated today as a museum railway. The Decauville company built it in 1892, among other things to increase the efficiency of its flying track , i.e. H. from transportable track yokes , built narrow-gauge railways .
history
The Paris – Toulouse railway line of the Chemin de Fer de Paris à Orléans led through Toury. It was recognized that an easy and inexpensive to lay field railway would be advantageous to connect Pithiviers and the surrounding villages with Toury. The system developed shortly before by Paul Decauville seemed suitable, and so the Société Decauville was granted a 15-year concession to build and operate the system.
The main line was opened on July 25, 1892 and had a length of exactly 30.620 km when it opened. She served several branch lines. It was originally planned to also extend the route at Toury to 31.267 km to create a connection to Janville .
Initially, the light railroad was primarily used to transport sugar beets, which were and are an important agricultural product in the region. There was a sugar refinery in Pithiviers and Toury, and the field railway connected them with each other and with the surrounding fields. The route of the railroad generally followed the public roads. The financial failure of the Société Decauville meant that the operation of the Tramway de Pithiviers à Toury was taken over temporarily by the department on January 1, 1899 and on March 29, 1901 in the Ponts et Chaussees.
Passenger traffic increased steadily until the Second World War. One railcar entered service in 1922, another followed in 1926, followed by two more vehicles acquired second-hand in 1937 by the Chemins de Fer du Calvados . After the war, traffic decreased due to better roads in the area and the increase in private vehicle traffic. Passenger traffic was discontinued in 1951, but freight traffic ran until December 31, 1964, with one last enthusiast special trip taking place on May 22, 1965. However, this should not be the end of the Tramway de Pithiviers à Toury .
Museum train
The Association du Musée des Transports de Pithiviers (AMTP) was created to maintain at least part of the route. Pithiviers was chosen as the location because the depot and workshops were already there. The 3.5 kilometers of the tram line to Ormes was reopened on April 23, 1966 as a museum railway and an extension of 0.5 kilometers to Bellébat , which was built to further remove the terminus from the busy road.

Passenger cars
Six Decauville type IS bogie passenger cars were delivered before the line opened. Five were rebuilt in 1931-1939 (No. V1 - V5 ). A sixth was rebuilt in 1942 in a similar design (No. V6 ). This car is preserved in the AMTP. In addition, three Fourgons were used.
Freight wagons
The TPT had many open wagons, but also some covered wagons and cattle wagons. Decauville supplied the initial stock, but later the workshops in Pithiviers made the wagons used on the TPT themselves.
