Stele in Ekmarkspark in Tranås municipality

Tranås is a Swedish granite that occurs between the villages of Tranås and Eksjö , west of Lake Vättern . This granite was formed 500 million years ago in the Cambrian .

Surname

In Germany, Tranås is usually written Tranas . The Granite Tranås Rubin is an intense light red granite that should not be confused with Tranås, because it is the granite called Askeryd from Småland , which has been quarried since 1986. It is not difficult to distinguish the “real” Tranås as a dark red granite from the Askeryk .

geology

The granite deposit in the Cambrian Formation arose when plutons penetrated the Earth's crust in the Scandinavian Shield and solidified over millions of years. In the long crystallization processes, the relatively homogeneous rock occurrence arose, which was not overprinted - like other rocks there - and thus changed.

Rock description and mineral inventory

The Tranås granite type was not broken until after the First World War . The medium to coarse-grained alkali granite is colored red due to a proportion of about 85% of red potash feldspars . The feldspar crystals are differently red depending on the amount of finely distributed hematite .

Light gray quartz and biotite are embedded between the feldspars , the latter mineral is recognizable as black grains, and it also contains 3% hornblende .

use

The natural stone is suitable in construction as a solid stone and for interior fittings, stone monuments and gravestones. Tranås is used in interior and exterior architecture as a decorative element and for stair and floor coverings and facades. It is also used in bathrooms as a washstand and in kitchens as a worktop , in sculpture and in horticulture for paving stones and bricks. It is frost-resistant and can be polished.

Most of this Swedish granite is exported.
