The grape heron beak ( Erodium botrys ) is an annual plant belonging to the genus of the heron beak . The species is native to the Mediterranean.

description

The grape heron beak is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of 5 to 40 centimeters. At the base of the stem , which is covered with long, downwardly twisted hair and glandular in the upper part, there are pinnately to one or two pinnate leaves , and on stem leaves always two pinnate leaves . The egg-shaped to lanceolate blade is 2 to 4 inches long.

Flowering time is from April to May. The inflorescence is a two-, rarely one to four-flowered umbel , the brown, ovate-lanceolate bracts are 2 millimeters long and 2 to 4 millimeters wide. The 9 to 11 millimeter long sepals are occupied by glands and have a 1 millimeter long awn at their extreme end . The petals are purple and up to 15 millimeters long. The whitish hairy fruits are 8 to 15 millimeters long, at the outer end they have two wings. The beak is 5 to 11 inches long.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 40, less often 60.

The species is common around the Mediterranean. It occurs in Paotugal, Spain, France, Madeira and the Canary Islands, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia, Italy, the Balkan Peninsula, Bulgaria, Turkey, Cyprus, Lebanon, Syria, Israel and Belarus. She is a neophyte in America, Australia, and New Zealand. The stenöke species mainly colonizes wasteland and ruins in the Mediterranean region at altitudes of 0 to 1000 meters.

It was also introduced in Australia, where it is now one of the preferred food plants of the ringed parakeet , which eats the immature seed heads of this plant.
