The grape thorn ( Danae racemosa ), also called Alexandrian laurel , is the only species of the genus Danae in the asparagus family (Asparagaceae).

features

The grape thorn is an evergreen subshrub that reaches heights of 40 to 100 centimeters. It forms a rhizome . The stem is alternately branched. There are 5 to 7 dummy leaves on the side branches . The dummy leaves are lanceolate , pointed and measure 5 to 8 × 1 to 2.5 centimeters. The flowers are hermaphroditic. 5 to 8 flowers each form loose grapes that are attached to the end of the side branches. The perianth is grown to two-thirds, is located in the throat a fleshy ring.

Flowering time is from May to June.

Occurrence

The grape thorn occurs in southern Turkey in Latakia and in northwestern Iran and Talysh in shady oak forests and on cliffs at altitudes of around 1000 meters.

use

The grape thorn is rarely used as an ornamental plant. It has been in culture since 1713 at the latest.

According to the Oxyrhynchus Papyri , a necklace made of twisted grape thorn leaves is said to have helped the Egyptians against hangover symptoms.
