Traugott Schiess (painter)
Traugott Schiess (born November 14, 1834 in St. Gallen , † November 14, 1869 in Munich ; resident in Herisau ) was a Swiss landscape painter and artist from the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden .
Life
Traugott Schiess was a son of Johann Heinrich Schiess, pastor . In 1862 he married Emilie Steffan, daughter of Johann Gottfried Steffan . In St. Gallen he completed an apprenticeship in lithographic drawing. From 1851 to 1854 he was a student of Friedrich Horner in Basel . From 1854 he was based in Munich. There he attended classes with Friedrich Voltz and his later father-in-law Johann Gottfried Steffan. He spent the summer months in Switzerland . He got to know Rudolf Koller . He completed two short study visits in his studio in Zurich. In Munich he met Arnold Böcklin . In addition to animal pictures, Schiess mainly created mountain, forest and ideal landscapes.
