Trendafil Stojtschew ( Bulgarian Трендафил Стойчев , English transcription Trendafil Stoychev; born July 18, 1953 in Asenovgrad , Plovdiv Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter . He became world champion in 1974 and won a silver medal in the light heavyweight division at the 1976 Olympic Games .

Career

Trendafil Stojtschew came to weightlifting as a youth as part of a talent search offensive that had been initiated by the then national coach of the Bulgarian weightlifters Ivan Abadschiew . He came from Asenovgrad and also started for the local sports club Asenowets . During his weightlifting career he was a member of the army, but also attended the sports college in Sofia , where he was trained as a weightlifting trainer.

He first appeared on the international weightlifting stage in 1972, when he took second place behind the Soviet athlete Smirnow, 420 kg, at a weightlifting tournament of the Austrian daily Volksstimme in Vienna in the middleweight category with 410 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. In 1973 he scored at a tournament in Pyongyang in a duel, pressing had meanwhile been abolished, 312.5 kg in the middleweight and won over Grigoryev from the USSR, who also reached 312.5 kg.

1974 Trendafil Stojtschew was used for the first time at international championships. He started at the European Championships in Verona and finished in the light heavyweight with 347.5 kg (152.5-195) the 2nd place behind Vladimir Ryschenkow from the USSR , who came to 357.5 kg. One of his greatest successes in his career he succeeded in the same year at the World Championships in Manila , because he won the world title in a duel with 350 kg (155-195) before Leif Jensen from Norway , who also achieved 350 kg, but a little heavier when Trendafil Stojtschew was and Rolf Milser from the Federal Republic of Germany , who came to 347.5 kg.

In 1975 Trendafil Stojtschew increased his duel performance at the World and European Championships in Moscow in the light heavyweight division to 357.5 kg (162.5-195). Walery Schary from the USSR achieved the same performance and became, because he was a little easier than Stoychev, the new world and European champion.

In the 1976 Olympic year, Trendafil Stoychev continued to improve. He reached 365 kg (167.5-197.5) in a duel at the European Championships in Berlin and yet this performance was enough behind Walery Schary, who at 367.5 kg (165-202.5) and his compatriot Blagoj Blagojew , the 365 kg (165–200), only to 3rd place. At the Olympic Games in Montreal , he managed 360 kg (162.5–197.5 kg) in a duel. With this performance he originally came in 3rd place behind Walery Schary, 365 kg (162.5–202.5) and Blagoj Blagojew, 362.5 kg (162.5–200). Blagojew, however, was subsequently disqualified for doping and Trendafil Stojchev was awarded the silver medal .

In 1977 Trendafil Stojtschew was in an inexplicably weak form at the World and European Championships in Stuttgart . He only managed one valid attempt at 150 kg in the snatch and failed three times in the push at his initial weight of 182.5 kg. He remained without a duel and retired without a place.

After that he did not appear at any international championships. As a result, his 2nd place at the 5th National Spartakiad 1979 in Sofia is known. He managed there in the light heavyweight duel 352.5 kg (160-192.5) and was second behind his compatriot Kamenopolski, who came to 357.5 kg.

After his active time, Trendafil Stojchev worked in Bulgaria as a weightlifting trainer. In the 1990s he worked in the same position in India and after 2004 in Vietnam .
