The genus Trias from the family of orchids (Orchidaceae) includes 14 species ranging from China to Australia occur. According to R. Govaerts, however, they all belong to the genus Bulbophyllum .

description

All species of the genus Trias have the growth habit of the Bulbophyllum species. Typical of Triassic is the beak-like anther pointing forward and single-leaf bulbs that are always widely spaced. The inflorescence is much shorter than the leaf. The plants are single-flowered and form a triangular flower. This impression is created by the three similar sepals , of which the lateral sepals are slightly crooked on the base of the column. The petals are very small. The tongue-shaped lip is small and movably connected to the column base. The plants have two pairs of pollinia.

distribution

All species of the genus Trias are small epiphytes that usually occur without substrate on the bark of trees in monsoon forests .

Centers of diversity are India and Indonesia, but the genus extends to China and Australia. The distribution areas for Trias stocksii extend in the west from the coast of Bombay and south to northern Kanara. In southern Burma the species Trias natusa , Trias oblonga and Trias picta occur. The Trias picta occurs in the east as far as Thailand. Here is also the distribution of the trias intermedia , trias mollis and trias nana . In Vietnam one finds Trias nasuta and Trias nummularia , while Trias antheae and Trias tothastes occur only in Borneo .

Systematics and botanical history

Triassic is classified within the tribe Dendrobieae in the subtribe Bulbophyllinae . Related genera are Bulbophyllum , Hapalochilus , Sunipia etc. The genus Trias was established in 1830 by John Lindley with the type species Trias oblonga . The name Trias comes from the Greek word τριάς trias , "the three number" with reference to the triangular flower shape.

The genus includes 14 species. But today they are placed in the genus Bulbophyllum .
