Tribes 2 is a science fiction based first person shooter . Set in the Earthsiege universe, Tribes 2 is the second title in the Tribes series . Developed by Dynamix , Tribes 2 went on sale in March 2001 . It was distributed by Sierra Entertainment .

Backstory

Tribes 2 is set in 3941, eight years after the clans Blood Eagle and Diamond Sword first met. The player takes on the role of a futuristic soldier . He can choose between four factions: Diamond Sword , Blood Eagle , Star Wolf and Children of the Phoenix . In addition to the human clans, the player can also opt for the human-made bioderms . Although the clans are visually different, the choice has no effect on the game.

Gameplay

The focus of Tribes 2 is on the multiplayer mode , in addition the game includes five training missions for the single player . There you learn the basic elements of the game under the guidance of a computer voice. In addition to the well-known Deathmatch , Tribes 2 includes other, especially team-oriented game modes such as Rabbit and Siege , mainly Capture the Flag is played with up to 64 players.

The special thing about the Tribes series is the smooth transition between internal and external fights on the extensive levels including aircraft and ground vehicles and the design for a large number of players (up to 64). This made the Tribes series an important influence on later multiplayer first-person shooters such as Unreal Tournament 2004 or Battlefield 1942 .

Tribes introduced some strategic elements, such as sensors and defense towers, to the world of first-person shooters. Tribes also included different classes of players , similar to Team Fortress . These classes can be further individualized through load-outs with different weapons or pieces of equipment.

Due to the many strategic elements and the complex gameplay, Tribes is seen by many as a game that is rather difficult to learn for beginners. Late and lateral entrants from other games often find it difficult to gain a foothold in Tribes.

A special function in Tribes 2 is the community browser with its own GUI . It includes a news function, forums, T-Mail, chat and a browser. Due to the belief at Sierra Entertainment that the forums were not being used in their favor, they were switched off. After the closure of Dynamix , the developer and at the same time a subsidiary of Sierra, the news function was also switched off. The player profiles and clan pages still work today, as does the built-in browser.

Armor

There are three different armor classes in Tribes .

  • Peltast / Scout Armor / Light : With the light armor , the player penetrates to heights that cannot be reached by other classes. In return, the player is only allowed to carry three weapons. The only class available to the Light is the sniper rifle, the cloaking pack with which the player can make himself invisible and the ability to control the Wildcat hovercraft motorcycle . Mobile equipment stations and turrets cannot be worn for this. The light is popular with players because of its speed and is therefore used for capping (conquering the enemy flag) and defending your own flag.
  • Hoplite / Assault Armor / Medium : The medium armor achieves a balance between speed and weapon capacity. The medium can absorb more hit points than the light and can control all vehicles except the Wildcat. Due to the five weapons that he can carry with him, the player has a great variety compared to the Light . Mainly used in defense to place turrets and sensors, the medium is also used for capping.
  • Myrmidon / Juggernaut Armor / Heavy : The heavy armor can carry eight and thus most weapons. The Mortar (a portable mortar ) can only be carried by the Heavy. A striking feature of the mortar is the green tail that a bullet pulls. In terms of range and damage, it is the most powerful weapon in the game. The biggest disadvantage is the heavy's severely limited mobility. Usually it is flown into enemy territory by transporter, but due to its mass it also takes on a defensive role on the flag or in building entrances. The Heavy cannot control vehicles.

vehicles

Tribes 2 brings some revised versions of the vehicles from the predecessor, but does not fail to integrate new ones into the game. The vehicles include several hovercraft vehicles and two aircraft.

  • Wildcat Grav Cycle: Wildcat Grav Cycle is an unarmed, single-person hovercraft motorcycle. The Wildcat is characterized by its speed and can also be used to drive on water.
  • Shrike Scout Fighter: The Scout is without a doubt the fastest vehicle in the game. Like the Wildcat, designed for one person, the Shrike has a double-barreled energy cannon that shares its energy with that of the shield. The scout is preferably used to fire on enemy aircraft and vehicles, especially experienced players fly just above the ground to attack opposing players directly. The integrated AWACS system extends the sensor range and enables the early detection of opposing players.
  • Havoc Gunship Transport: The slow transporter has space for four passengers and has no weapons. However, the passengers can use their weapons to protect the Havoc. Using a passenger's Sensor Jammer Pack prevents the enemy turrets from automatically targeting and allows the Havoc to approach the enemy base unseen by sensors. Due to its size and slow speed, the Havoc is very vulnerable to the Shrike.
  • Beowulf Assault Tank: The Beowulf is a hovercraft tank, equipped with an energy shield and two weapons. One player takes on the role of driver, the second controls the mortar cannon and the machine gun.
  • Thundersword Bomber: The bomber has space for three players. One is responsible for the flying, the second for the weapons and the third takes care of the defense against enemy missiles and shrikes. The Thundersword has two weapons: an energy cannon and a bomb that can be used multiple times.
  • Jericho Mobile Base: The Jericho is the slowest vehicle in the game, but has a strong protective shield. It can interfere with enemy sensors within a small radius. As soon as the Jericho is up and running, players can equip themselves at the Inventory Station. There is a stationary cannon on the roof for defense. Enemy players can take over a Jericho when the Jericho is being set up and the cockpit is not yet surrounded by the protective shield.
