The Trinity Church (translated: " Trinity Church" , often with the addition of "Wall Street" called) is one of the most famous churches in New York . It is located between Broadway and Trinity Place immediately opposite the northwest end of Wall Street and is the place of worship for a congregation of the American Episcopal Church .

history

Today's church building was completed in 1846 according to plans by Richard Upjohn in the Gothic Revival style and consecrated on Ascension Day. At 86 meters, the tower of Trinity Church was the tallest building in New York City at the time, but has now been significantly exceeded by skyscrapers in the immediate vicinity. Trinity Church has been on the National Register of Historic Places since December 1976 and has the status of a National Historic Landmark .

The building that stands today was preceded by two previous buildings, from whose time the neighboring cemetery also dates. The first church building was used for worship from 1698 and was destroyed on September 21, 1776 by a fire that broke out in Lower Manhattan due to acts of war during the American War of Independence . The construction of the second church began in 1788 and was consecrated in 1790. This structure was damaged by snow loads in the winter of 1838/1839 and then laid down.

In the cemetery of Trinity Church there are graves of some well-known personalities from the US founding history, including Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804), William Bradford (1590-1657), Robert Fulton (1765-1815), Albert Gallatin (1761-1849) ) and Johann Jakob Astor (1763–1848).

Today's Trinity Church had a pipe organ built by Henry Erben in 1846 . This was extensively revised and renewed in the 1920s by the EM Skinner Organ Company and in 1961 by the Aeolian Skinner company . The accumulation of dust and dirt caused by the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 on the nearby World Trade Center resulted in severe corrosion damage to this organ. As a temporary solution until a pipe organ was rebuilt, a three-manual electronic organ from Marshall & Ogletree with a console from the Italian organ builder Fratelli Ruffatti was purchased in 2003 .

As part of the two-year restoration of the church, the Trinity Church will receive a completely new pipe organ with 113 stops from the German organ building company Glatter-Götz , which is expected to be fully playable in 2022.
