Tristan is a male, rarely female given name .

Origin, meaning and distribution

The name Tristan comes from the Celtic and is derived from drest or drust , which means (gun) noise .

The name is best known in the German-speaking world for Richard Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde , based on the epic novel Tristan by Gottfried von Strasbourg , written around 1210 . This is based on the old French Tristan novel by Thomas d'Angleterre (around 1180). With Gottfried and - in his successor - with Wagner the name Tristan is taken from franz. ' Dreary ' = "sad" derived. Use as a female given name is rare.
