A drum tower ( Chinese  鼓樓  /  鼓楼 , Pinyin gǔlóu , Japanese korō ) is a building erected in old Chinese or East Asian cities or in traditional temples for large signal drums installed in them . As a rule, the bell tower ( Chinese  鐘樓  /  钟楼 , Pinyin zhōnglóu , Japanese shōrō ) and drum tower form an architectural pair called the drum and bell tower ( Chinese  鐘 鼓樓  /  钟 鼓楼 , Pinyin zhōng-gǔlóu ). They can usually be found in the center of the village and were also used to indicate times or for celebrations.

Various Chinese city districts and other places are named after and bear the name Gulou (see main article Gulou ).

The most famous structures of this type include the drum tower in Beijing and that of Xi'an in Shaanxi . Several drum towers (and bell towers) are on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China , including the latter two, as well as on the list of monuments at the provincial level, etc.
