Tropoja ( Albanian  also  Tropojë ) is a small place in the municipality of Tropoja in northeastern Albania about five kilometers from the border with Kosovo . Tropoja is also the name of the entire region and a former administrative district - to differentiate the village is now also called Tropoja e vjetër (Old Tropoja) . Tropoja used to be the most important place in the region and its center. However, the administration was moved to Bajram Curr in 1952 . The city, located around 15 kilometers to the west, is now the center of the region.

Until 2015 Tropoja was an independent municipality, which was about 266 square kilometers and comprised around a quarter of the Torpoja district.

The place is on a slope above the valley at 380  m above sea level. A. There are some Ottoman- era houses and a central square. In the northern part of the former municipal area there are high mountains that rise to over 2000 meters and peak in Shkëlzen ( 2405  m above sea level ). Around Tropoja there are various smaller lakes and a reservoir for irrigation that holds 160,000 cubic meters.

The old municipality of Tropoja had 4117 inhabitants in 2011, who were spread over 15 villages. Like all mountain areas in Albania, Tropoja is also badly affected by migration. In 2001 the community had 5612 inhabitants. At that time, less than ten percent fell in the central village of Tropoja with 467 people. The larger villages like Viçidol are partly located directly on the through road, partly like Kerrnaj or Buçaj high on the mountain.

Most residents also have relatives across the border, which was closed until after the end of the Kosovo war . During the difficult transformation period in the 1990s, many residents are said to have worked as smugglers .

The most famous son of Tropoja is the doctor and politician Sali Berisha , who was born just outside the town and who tended sheep as a child. During his tenure as President (1992–1997) he protected his fellow citizens from Tropoja in a special way. From 2005 to 2013 Berisha was Albanian Prime Minister.
