Tropolys

Until 2006, Tropolys was an independent telephone company that offered landline connections in several regions of Germany . It existed as a network of 14 local telephone companies (so-called city ​​carriers ) and was one of Deutsche Telekom's competitors in the provision of full connections. In 2006 the company was incorporated into Versatel Germany. The managing director of the new group was the previous Tropolys CEO , Peer Knauer .

The company was founded in 2000 as a merger of three Westphalian telephone companies, TeleBeL ( Wuppertal ), CNE (Essen) and citykom ( Münster ).

The network of the former Tropolys extends to parts of North Rhine-Westphalia (predominantly the Ruhr area), Hesse , Saxony-Anhalt , Saxony and Thuringia as well as the urban areas and the surrounding area of Potsdam , Mainz and Saarbrücken .

The shares in the company were acquired in May 2004 by the private equity investor Apax (63%), the 14 municipal companies (32%) and Tropolys management (5%) from the Finnish telecommunications company Elisa . In 2003 Tropolys achieved sales of EUR 134 million. In the third quarter of 2004, sales amounted to EUR 33.4 million and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) to EUR 3.8 million.

In June 2006, Apax sold its stake in Tropolys to its own stake in Versatel for EUR 108 million .
