Trude Marstein (born April 18, 1973 in Tønsberg ) is a Norwegian writer and translator.

life and work

Trude Marstein studied education, psychology and literature at the University of Oslo and completed an author degree at the Telemark University in . In 1998 she made her debut with the prose collection Sterk sult, plutselig kvalme (Great hunger, sudden nausea), for which she was awarded the Tarjei Vesaas Debutant Prize. She wrote a children's book, novels, essays and wrote a play with other authors.

In 2000 her first novel Plutselig høre noen åpne en dør (Suddenly the sound of a door opening) was published. In 2006 the Dagbladet newspaper named it one of the 25 best Norwegian novels of the past 25 years. The action takes place in Oslo and is written from the perspective of a woman who reflects on her life and cannot free herself from the web of motives of her own and that of others.

“Trude Marstein's language is simple and yet artistic: she puts her observations on paper in clear, everyday words and short texts, small time leaps and the linear sentence constructions seem realistic. Language is not (only) a means of expression, but a topic: Questions about the meaning of everyday expressions and formulations that have become cliché are obviously not only preoccupying the young woman from Plutselig høre noen åpne en dør , but also the author. "

- Stefanie Plappert

Her novel Gjøre godt (Doing good, 2006) received particular attention . It received the Norwegian Critics' Prize and has been translated into Danish, Swedish, Dutch and French. The plot of the very extensive novel, which focuses on the birthday party of the beautiful, ambitious and not particularly personable Karoline, takes place on a single weekend in July in and around Café Elvebakken in a fictional Norwegian provincial town. Starting from this event, 118 narrative voices (guests, staff, babysitters, neighbors, random passers-by) branch out in many directions, with new relationships and perspectives emerging and being interwoven by the author in filigree narrative art. Marstein's “technical brilliance” in particular was praised. The reader still maintains an overview of the large number of people; through perspective shifts "slowly a picture emerges of the banal, accidental, tragic and perhaps even beautiful life of people who live close to one another and whose circles sometimes touch with or against their will".

In 2004 Konstruksjon og inderlighet (Construction and Inwardness ), 14 essays on literature, appeared. Marstein lives in the Oslo district of Gamle Oslo .
