Truman George Yuncker

Truman George Yuncker (born March 20, 1891 on a farm near Carson City , Michigan , † February 6, 1964 in Greencastle , Indiana ) was an American botanist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Yunck. "; earlier the abbreviation " Yuncker " was also in use.

Life

Yuncker was from 1923 until his retirement in 1956 director of the Botanical and Bacteriological Institute ("Department of Botany and Bacteriology") at DePauw University . From 1919 until his death in 1964, he was the curator of the DePauw Herbarium, which was acquired by the New York Botanical Garden in 1987 .

Yuncker specialized primarily in the pepper family (Piperaceae). His early studies were on the genus Cuscuta , in which he described 67 new species. For the work North American Flora by Nathaniel Lord Britton he worked on this genre (Series 2, Volume 4, 1965). Yuncker described a total of 839 new plant species.

Honors

The plant genus Yunckeria Lundell from the primrose family (Primulaceae) has been named after him.
