The Tschernushka Nunatak ( Russian Гора Чернушка , in Norway Chernushkaknatten ) is a 1640 m high nunatak in the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It rises 3 km southwest of the Sandset on the west side of the western Petermann chain of the Wohlthat massif .
It was discovered and mapped using aerial photographs during the German Antarctic Expedition in 1938/39 under the direction of polar explorer Alfred Ritscher . Further mapping was carried out on the basis of aerial photographs and measurements of the Third Norwegian Antarctic Expedition (1956–1960) and again during a Soviet expedition that lasted from 1960 to 1961. Participants in the latter research trip named him after the dog Tschernuska , one of the passengers on the Sputnik 9 space mission on March 9, 1961.
