Tsui Lap Chee

Tsui Lap-Chee , OC , O.Ont ( Chinese  徐立 之 , Pinyin Xú Lìzhī , Jyutping Ceoi 4 Lap 6 zi 1 ; born December 31, 1950 in Shanghai ) is a researcher in the field of genetics , he was president from 2002 to 2014 and Vice Chancellor of Hong Kong University .

biography

Tsui was born in the People's Republic of China and studied in Hong Kong at New Asia College, one of the three founding colleges of the Chinese University of Hong Kong , where he obtained the degrees of Bachelor (1972) and Master (1974). He went to the USA for a doctorate in biology . It was there that his interest in genetics was aroused. Eventually he emigrated to Canada , where he was able to gain a position at a children's hospital in Toronto and a position as professor at the University of Toronto for molecular and medical genetics. Together with Francis Collins from the University of Michigan , he began to research the genetic causes of cystic fibrosis and in 1989 was able to localize the CFTR gene that is defective in cystic fibrosis .

In 1990 Tsui received a Gairdner Foundation International Award , and in 2004 he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences . In 2012 he was inducted into the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame . For 2018 he was awarded the Warren Alpert Foundation Prize .
