Yūko Tsushima

Yūko Tsushima ( Japanese 津 島 佑 子 , Tsushima Yūko , real name 津 島 里 子 Tsushima Satoko ; born March 30, 1947 in Mitaka , Tokyo Prefecture , †  February 18, 2016 in Tokyo ) was a Japanese writer. She was the second daughter of the writer Dazai Osamu , who died of suicide when she was one year old.

Life

Tsushima studied English literature at the Shirayuri Catholic Women's University in Chofu and later at Meiji University . During this time she began to write. At the age of 24, she published her first book of short stories entitled Shaniku-sai ( 謝 肉 祭 ). In 1970 she married and gave up her work at the Hōsō Bangumi Center ( 放送 番 組 セ ン タ ー , Hōsō bangumi sentā , English Broadcast Programming Center of Japan , BPCJ for short). The divorce took place seven years later. In 1985, their son died at the age of eight.

Yūko Tsushima has received numerous literary prizes. Her works are strongly autobiographical; they address experiences that the author herself has lived through: growing up without a father, divorce, the life of a single mother, the death of her own child.

Yūko Tsushima died of lung cancer in a Tokyo hospital on February 18, 2016, at the age of 68 .
