The Tugaloo River (originally Tugalo River ) is a 73.9 km long river along the border of Georgia and South Carolina .
The river is formed by the two headwaters Tallulah River and Chattooga River , each of which flows into an arm of the Lake Tugalo reservoir . The Tugaloo flows below the Tugaloo Dam to Lake Yonah , which is dammed by the Yonah Dam . The river eventually flows into an arm of Lake Hartwell . This is also fed by the Seneca River . The outflow of the reservoir then forms the Savannah River .
Border disputes between Georgia and South Carolina over river islands in the Tugaloo River were settled in 1787 by the Treaty of Beaufort . The US Supreme Court upheld this ruling in two trials in 1922 and 1989 .
The river's catchment area is home to some of the most challenging whitewater trails in the southeastern United States. These are a draw for kayakers and canoeists across the country.
The name of the river comes from Tugaloo , a Cherokee town that was on the riverbank near the mouth of Toccoa Creek.
