The Chattooga River (also Chatooga , Chatuga or Chautaga ) is one of the few larger rivers in the southeastern United States whose course is still original. From its source at Cashiers in North Carolina it flows along the border of South Carolina and Georgia through the Appalachian Mountains in a southerly direction and flows after 92 kilometers into the reservoir Lake Tugalo , which is also fed by the Tallulah River . Below the Tugaloo Dam , the river is then called the Tugaloo River , a source of the Savannah River .

Since May 10, 1974, the Chattooga River has the status of a National Wild and Scenic River and enjoys special protection. It flows through the Chattahoochee , Nantahala and Sumter National Forests and the Ellicott Rock Wilderness .

The Chattooga River with its rapids and waterfalls is an Eldorado for rafting , kayaking and whitewater canoeing in the winter months .

Scenes for the thriller When everyone is dying (Original title: Deliverance) were filmed on this river in 1972 .

Chattooga County in Georgia is named after the river .
