KBR, Inc. (formerly Kellogg Brown & Root, Inc. ) is a US engineering and construction company , the largest non- union construction company in the US. KBR is also the largest private military service provider for the US Department of Defense and other states. Until spring 2007 KBR was a subsidiary of the US oil industry group Halliburton .

history

Brown & Root Services was founded in 1919 by the brothers George and Herman Brown and their brother-in-law Dan Root; after Herman's death, George Brown sold it to Halliburton in 1963 for $ 36.7 million .

MW Kellogg Co. was founded in 1901. In 1987 MW Kellogg Co. was bought by Dresser Industries . After Halliburton acquired Dresser Industries in 1998, MW Kellogg Co. was merged with Brown & Root Services to form Kellogg Brown & Root (KBR). Between 2006 and 2007 KBR was gradually spun off from the parent company .

In 2016 KBR took over the government contractor Wyle .

Business areas

KBR operates worldwide primarily as a property developer , construction company and operator of refineries , oil fields , pipelines and chemical plants , other civil infrastructure facilities and as a service provider for US government agencies. The businesses are grouped into the four divisions Engineering & Construction (E&C), Government , Civil Infrastructure and Ventures .

Activities for the US armed forces

KBR and its predecessor companies were already active for the US military during World War II and the Vietnam War . In 1996, as part of the SFOR mission in the Balkans, then US President Bill Clinton commissioned Brown & Root to support NATO and US troops. This order was later transferred to the KFOR mission in Kosovo , where KBR u. a. was involved in the construction of Camp Bondsteel . In 2002, KBR received a $ 100 million contract from the State Department to build a new US embassy in Kabul , Afghanistan. As part of Operation Enduring Freedom , KBR was awarded a contract worth $ 216 million, including the construction of military camps for the US Air Force in Kandahar and Bagram. KBR trained foreign troops for Georgia .

With an order volume of 16 billion US dollars (as of March 2008), KBR is by far the largest US American contractor for the US Department of Defense in Iraq . The numerous contracts awarded to KBR in Iraq include the reconstruction of the country's oil infrastructure that was destroyed in the Iraq war (contract value around 2 billion US dollars; under Dick Cheney's Vice-Presidency, awarded by the government without tendering as part of the "Restore Iraqui Oil" program) as well as the logistical support of the US troops stationed there. At the time of the contract, Dick Cheney was CEO of KBR parent company Halliburton; he gave up this position only in the course of his candidacy for the office of US Vice President in the George W. Bush administration.

The American film director Robert Greenwald documented in the resulting 2006 film Iraq for Sale: The War Profiteers (German as: "Iraq for Sale: The war profiteers ") his observations about the way in which, among other things, the company KBR Halliburton from Iraq -War draws its financial benefit.

In March 2008, the US newspaper The Boston Globe reported that KBR had about $ 500 million in taxes and social security contributions (e.g. for Social Security and Medicare ) for the approximately 10,500 US citizens among the total of 21,000 KBR skilled clerks saved by two subcontractors as a recruiter with " mailbox headquarters " on a tax haven applicable Cayman Islands have established. The two companies that only exist as a corporate shell are, on the one hand, Service Employers International Inc. , for which around 20,000 people are supposed to work in Iraq, according to the media report; it was founded before Cheney became CEO of Halliburton. The second company is Overseas Administrative Services and, according to its own information, has 1,020 employees in management; it was founded shortly after Cheney became CEO. However, KBR presents the outsourced workers as their own employees. This construction is covered by a legally controversial regulation, according to which employees of private service providers for the US government in Iraq enjoy political immunity from prosecution.

Activities for the British Royal Navy

As a 51% majority owner of the Devonport Management Limited (DML) consortium , KBR was also the owner and operator of the largest naval base in Western Europe, the Devonport naval base of the British Royal Navy near Plymouth, until June 2007 . DML also works for the Royal Navy in the supply of fuel to nuclear submarines and various maintenance work on ships. On June 28, 2007 DML was sold to the British Babcock International Group and now forms the Babcock Marine division there .
