Camp Bondsteel

Camp Bondsteel is a military base of the United States Army near Ferizaj in Kosovo . It is the headquarters of the US KFOR contingent (MNTF-E). The base is named after James Leroy Bondsteel , a Vietnam War veteran. Camp Bondsteel is located east of Ferizaj in a rural area and is about half the size of the entire city.

The base was established after NATO troops marched into Kosovo in June 1999. It covers 386 hectares (3,860,000 m²) and is surrounded by a security fence. Around 250 wooden barracks of the “Southeast Asia” (SEAhut) type serve as offices and accommodation. The base houses up to 7,000 US Army and Allied troops.

Camp Bondsteel is equipped with the usual facilities of a base this size, which is a cinema , gyms , sports fields , two chapels , bars , a supermarket and fast food - restaurants include. Courses from the University of Maryland and the University of Chicago can be taken in the affiliated Laura Bush Education Center . According to the current US stationing concept, it is a Forward Operating Site .

About 20 miles east of Bondsteel, near Gjilan , is the Camp Monteith military base , which was handed over to the local Kosovo Protection Corps (TMK) in the summer of 2007 .
