Tuiloma Neroni Slade

Tuiloma Neroni Slade (born April 8, 1941 in Samoa ) is a politician, lawyer and diplomat from Samoa and current Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat . From 2003 to 2006 he was a judge at the International Criminal Court in The Hague .

Studied and rose to the position of Attorney General of Samoa

Slade graduated from Victoria University in Wellington with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) degree in 1967 . He then worked for a law firm in Wellington for a year.

From 1969 to 1983 he worked in the judicial administration of Samoa. From 1969 to 1973 he was Senior Legal Advisor and Chief Public Prosecutor in the Attorney General's Office. In the meantime, he graduated in 1971, the Hague Academy of International Law in The Hague as well as a stage in the Office of Legal Affairs of the Secretariat of the United Nations in New York . From 1973 to 1975 he was legal advisor to the Legislative Assembly ( Fono ) of Samoa, until 1976 also head of the Samoan delegation to the III. UN Conference on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS III).

In 1976, Slade was appointed Attorney General of Samoa. He held this office until 1982. From 1980 to 1982 he was also acting president of the Supreme Court of Samoa.

In 1983 Slade became the assistant director of the Legal Department of the Commonwealth Secretariat in London . During the following ten years he was legal advisor to conferences of the member states on various legal subjects.

Ambassador and Chairman of AOSIS

From 1993 to 2003 Slade was Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Samoa to the United Nations. He was also accredited as Ambassador to the United States and as High Commissioner to Canada . During this time he took part in several international conferences on issues relating to the use of nuclear weapons , environmental protection and climate change .

Slade was from 1997 to 2002 as the successor to Annette des Iles chairman of the Alliance of Small Island States (AOSIS). He was succeeded in this office in 2002 by Jagdish Koonjul .

Judge at the International Criminal Court

The first session of the Assembly of States Parties to the International Criminal Court (ICC) elected Slade in the 28th ballot on February 7, 2003 in New York to the judges' panel. His term of office began - as for all other judges of the ICC - on March 11, 2003 with the taking of the oath of office. From July 2004 he was presiding judge of the II. Preliminary Chamber, which at that time dealt with the situation in Uganda (situation ICC-02/04). At the fourth session of the Assembly of States Parties in January 2006, he was not re-elected, so that his term of office ended after three years on March 10, 2006.

Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat

In early August 2008, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat announced Slade's nomination for the office of Secretary General of the Secretariat. The nomination was made by the Samoan government. The last Secretary General, Greg Urwin , had already resigned from his post in May 2008 for health reasons and died on August 9, 2008. During its 39th meeting on August 20, 2008 in Niue , the Forum elected Slade for a term of three years Secretary General. He took office on October 13, 2008.
