The Orphanides Tulip ( Tulipa orphanidea ) is a plant from the genus of tulips ( Tulipa ) in the family of Liliaceae (Liliaceae).

The Orphanides tulip is a perennial bulbous plant that reaches heights of 10 to 20 (35) centimeters. The stem is hairless or hairy. The 2 to 7 leaves reach a size of 20 × 2 centimeters. They are green, bald and often reddish at the edge. The 1 to 4 flowers are spherical to star-shaped. The bracts are copper-red to orange, rarely yellow and red. Your basal spot is blackish and sometimes bordered yellow. The outer bracts measure 3 to 6 × 1 to 1.8 centimeters, the inner 3 to 6 × 1.2 to 2.1 centimeters. The anthers are dark olive and 7 to 12 millimeters long.

Flowering time is from April to May.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 36, less often 24 or 48.

Occurrence

The Orphanides tulip is found in the Southeast Balkans, Crete and western Turkey in black pine forests, in fields and on roadsides at altitudes from 0 to 1700 meters.

The Orphanides tulip is rarely used as an ornamental plant in rock gardens and borders. It has been in culture since 1861 at the latest.
