Tumulus on the Île Longue

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The round tumulus on the Île Longue is one of the large megalithic complexes that are located in Brittany in France on the islands in the Gulf of Morbihan . Île Longue, Enez-Hir in Breton, is also the name of a headland on the Crozon Peninsula in the Finistère department . The Allée couverte on the 1.2 km long and 0.4 km wide island, which is similar to the complex of Gavrinis , is inaccessible.

Depiction of the Barnenez , similar to the one on the Île Longue

description

The tumulus of 21 m diameter, which has only been slightly removed at the top , has been built up (like other tumuli; Tumulus by Dissignac ) in three stages separated by retaining walls. The approximately 11 m long corridor opens into an irregular polygonal chamber which is covered like a tholos by a cantilever vault over five meters high . The chamber consists of ten spaced-apart monoliths as wall stones, the spaces between which are made of flat stone layers that continue in the dome. This type of construction can also be found in the corridor, which consists of 15 differently dimensioned wall stones with sometimes very large gaps and nine horizontally placed cover stones. The last and largest rests on the curbs of the chamber. The corridor was closed with a door stone. Three stones are carved into the rock in the shape of a cooking pot , which are said to represent a form of the mother goddess (French: Déesse Mère ), as it is also shown in the Barnenez plant and in Mané-er-Hroek .
