The “Rastplatz vor dem Aichelberg” tunnel is a railway tunnel under construction on the new Wendlingen – Ulm line . It is located in the planning approval section 2.1c of the new line. The building permit for this section has been in place since April 2002.

location

The tunnel crosses the border between the districts of Esslingen and Göppingen . The west portal is in the district of Weilheim an der Teck , the east portal is in the district of Aichelberg . It is located between the route kilometers 37.223 and 37.475 of the new line and passes under the southern rest area on the A 8 that gives it its name .

planning

The tunnel will be constructed as a double-track framework using the cut -and- cover method. The clear height is 6.95 m above the top edge of the rail, the clear width is 12.30 m. A base filter up to 1.0 m thick is planned under the base of the structure. The tunnel is given a mouth profile . The excavated cross-section is 68 square meters.

Deutsche Bahn expects a construction time of around one year for the shell . The western area of the rest area has to be raised by around 2.80 meters. The design speed is 250 km / h.

In the area of the rest area, an approximately 40 m high mast for GSM-R and public mobile communications is to be built as one of 20 new mobile radio systems along the route between Stuttgart and Ulm . The municipality of Aichelberg rejected the measure in mid-December 2017, now the district office of Göppingen has to decide.

Awarding and construction

The work for the tunnel was put out to tender across Europe at the end of September 2014, along with a four-kilometer section of the new line. The construction contract with a volume of 39 million euros for a five-kilometer section of the new line, including the tunnel, was awarded in May 2015 to a consortium of Leonhard Weiss from Göppingen and the Fischer company from Weilheim an der Teck . The eponymous rest area was closed to traffic on January 9, 2017 due to the work on the tunnel. The shell construction was completed in December 2017.
