Ecological damage from the yacht
The largest contiguous seagrass meadows in the western Mediterranean lie between the Balearic Islands of Ibiza and Formentera . They are of great ecological value, have been under protection for years and are part of the Spanish World Heritage Site by UNESCO . In April 2012 the captain of the Turama caused great damage by improperly anchoring in the nature reserve here: By forbidden anchoring over the seagrass fields, he tore seaweed the size of one hectare from the seabed when the anchor was lifted . This incident was then documented by the marine biologist Manu San Felix and brought to the attention of a local environmental group, the GEN (Grup d'Estudis de la Naturalesa). Every year there is environmental damage here from anchored yachts, but this damage was by far the largest ever recorded.
